FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE;

Irem Temple CCís Pieczynski takes Senior Amateur Championship

Senior Division (Ages 55 and over)

SPRINGFIELD, Pa.-Ronald Pieczynski of Irem Temple CC and Ed Hennigan of Fox Hill CC have been close friends and golfing buddies for years. On Tuesday at Rolling Green GC (par 71, 6,249 yards), however, and with the Senior Amateur Championship title on the line, the two had to turn foes for the final 18 holes.

And in the end, it was a Pieczynski chip shot from in front of No. 18 (par 5, 484 yards) that stopped just inches from the hole that resulted in a birdie and his first Senior Amateur Championship crown.

Hennigan needed a 12-foot birdie from the right side of the flag to fall to draw even with Pieczynski, for the round, on the final hole, but watched it roll just to the high side.

"I told Ed in the morning that he or I was going to win it," said Pieczynski, who carded an even-par 71 in the second round and finished at 3-over-par 145 for the tournament. "I had that chip [yesterday] and this time I just wanted to get it on the green and let it roll like a putt."

Hennigan posted a 1-over-72 in Tuesday for a 146 total.

"Weíre both club champs [at our respective clubs], both Fox Hill members and we play a lot of golf together," said Hennigan of his pairing with Pieczynski. "I had three putts stop on the lip today. On No. 18, I hit a tree with my drive and that killed it just enough where I couldnít go for it in two. I was left with 30 yards and a bad angle on my third shot. But Iím happy. Iíve played in this event twice and finished first two years ago at Fox Hill and second today."

Pieczynski, 56, of Kingston, spoke of his gameís aggressiveness.

He made three birdies and three bogeys in recording even-par nine-hole scores of 36-35.

And on Rolling Greenís difficult par 3s, he finished at 1-over-par for the two days.

"You canít wait for others to make mistakes," said Pieczynski. "If Iím going to go down, Iím going to go down with guns blazing."

With that mentality, Pieczynski challenged every hole and watched the difference come when he drilled a 9-foot par save on No. 17 (par 5, 471 yards) to keep his chances alive. At that same time, Hennigan, 60, of Exeter, watched his hopes slip away as his downhill 10-foot birdie chance slid past.

Hennigan reported three bogeys and two birdies in his round. He was under par on No. 7 (par 5, 478 yards) and No. 8 (par 4, 400 yards).

Pieczynski had under-par scores on No. 5 (par 4, 360 yards), No. 12 (par 4, 330 yards) and No. 18.

Super-Senior Division (Ages 65 and older)

Warren Deakins of St. Davids GC remained focused, and in the end, it was that tunnel vision that proved decisive.

The 65-year-old resident of Gladwyne carded a closing-round score of 74 for a 9-over-par 151 total, two shots clear of the field, and the Super-Senior Division title on Tuesday at Rolling Green GC (par 71, 6,249 yards).

Larry Loughner of Conestoga CC placed second at 11-over-par and Bill Koepplin of Buck Hill GC and George Thorbahn of Rolling Green GC tied for third at 156.

"All day long I was focused on shooting a 74," said Deakins. "I didnít worry about what anyone else was doing. I figured if I shot a 74 and someone beat me then God bless."

Momentum and, in actuality, the victory, swung Deakinsí way on No. 16 (par 3, 144 yards).

Trailing Loughner by a shot standing on the 16th tee, Deakins rifled a 9-iron to a foot for an easy birdie. Loughner, on the other hand, nailed an 8-iron over the green that led to an eventual bogey.

Deakins finished with two pars on No. 17 (par 5, 471 yards) and No. 18 (par 5, 484 yards) while Loughner ended with a par, bogey.
"Itís a thrill," said Deakins, who carded four birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey on his round.

Deakins prior top finish in the Senior Amateur Championship was a second-place effort in 1993, in the regular Senior Division.
