Amateur Championship Qualifier - East

KUTZTOWN, Pa ~ 96 players started the day at Berkleigh Country Club looking to become one of the 32 players to qualify for the 91^st Pennsylvania State Amateur Championship to be held at Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, Pa. on July 26-28, 2004. This was the first on six sectional qualifiers that will be held throughout the Commonwealth.

Mike Lebow, 20, Spring Ford CC, carded seven birdies on his way to firing a 4-under par round of 68 to receive medalist honors. Also shooting under-par rounds were, Bill Mullen, Plymouth CC, and Harvin Groft, State College Elks CC, a 3-under par (69). Chris Gallagher, Penn Oaks GC, and John Sawin, Philadelphia CC, a 2-under par (70). Mike Shevlin, Llanerch CC, Shawn Hall, Four Seasons GC, Marc Mandel, White Manor CC, and Jarred Texter, Conestoga CC, 1-under par (71).

There was a playoff for 6 players who finished with a 4-over (76) to cut the final field to 32. They played for 5 positions. There was also a playoff for the 5 alternate spots. Chris Esbenshade, 4-over (76), who lost in the first playoff, took the first spot. Then the eight players at 5-over (77) played for 4 positions.

The Pennsylvania Amateur Championship is open to males that are members of clubs belonging to the Pennsylvania Golf Association and have a USGA handicap Index of 7.4 or lower.
