Herr's 67 Leads the 62nd Junior Championship

Zach Herr

Hershey, PA – Seventeen year-old, and new Vanderbilt University Commit, Zach Herr lead today’s field of 152 junior contenders with a tournament low 67. Herr, of Jericho National Club, would card six birdies and just two bogeys in his first round 4–under par 67.

“My goal was to go out there and hit as many fairways as I could” said Herr, “I knew that my iron game was right where I wanted it, and it would have given me a lot of opportunities.”

Nipping at Herr’s heels is JD Hughes from Carlisle Country Club. Coming into the event Hughes had his mind set on one thing, playing well.

“I just wanted to play well” Hughes said, “No matter what I shot I just wanted to play well.”

It would not appear to be that way however as he would start his first nine off with a bogey 5 on the 10th. Hughes turned it around then, and birdied 4 of his next seven holes. He finished his first nine just as he started, with a bogey 5 on the 18th.

Also in contention for this year’s championship is returning champion Reilly Erhardt, with an even par 71. Following suit with Reilly would be Brandon Matthews and Mariano Medico.

Herr and Hughes will tee off with Medico tomorrow at Hershey Country Club at 2:30pm following Erhardt, Matthews, and Max Bell.
