Pennsylvania State Better-Ball Championship

The first round of the Pennsylvania State Senior Better-Ball championship was held yesterday at the 6981-yard par 72 Rees Jones designed, Totteridge Golf Club in Greensburg, Pa. Fast and firm greens combined with dry conditions made for a challenging round.
In the Senior Division the team of Charlie Stringfellow and Bob Marek, made seven birdies and jumped into the first round lead with a 5-under par, 67. A group of former champions stand huddled around the top of the leaderboard ready to capture another championship, the 1995 champs of Richard Smith and Warren Deakins of Philadelphia CC carded 7 birdies and 3 bogies for a 4-under par 68, one shot behind the leaders. The 1998 Champions Phil Saylor, Sunnehanna CC and Jim Anderson, Willowbrook CC also finished with a 4-under par 68. The five time champion duo of Fred Tyler, Jr., Reading, and William Whitman, Berkshire, carded five birdies to stand two shots behind the leaders.
The second round was cancelled today due to inclement weather. The Championship was reduced to 18 holes.
