14 golfers from Central PA qualify for 111th Amateur Championship
YORK, Pa. – Qualifying for the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s 111th Amateur Championship began on Monday at Out Door Country Club, with 14 golfers from Central PA booking a spot in the upcoming tournament, scheduled for July 29.
Today's qualifying group was led by a pair of golfers tied with scores of four-under-par 68: Alex Gekas (Regents’ Glen CC) and Nick Ciocca (Aronimink GC). Behind them to round out the top five were a trio of golfers with scores of 69 (-3): Andrew Forjan (Royal Manchester Golf Links), Morgan Lofland (Phoenixville CC), and Nick Werner (Huntsville GC).
Gekas’ front nine featured three birdies and three bogeys, but he cleaned up all the mistakes on the back nine, birdieing holes No. 11, 12, 13, and 18 to finish the round.
Ciocca, who had one of the later tee times in the afternoon, started strong—with birdies on the first two holes as well as holes No. 5 and 9—to finish the front nine at two-under-par. A bogey on No. 12 was the only blemish on his back nine, with birdies on 13, 14, and 17 to secure his share of the top spot.
