SHAVERTOWN, Pa. – And then there were 45. The field at the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s (PAGA) 112th Amateur Championship has been cut down after the first two rounds at Hunstville Golf Club, with a pair of players separating themselves slightly from the rest of the pack. Oakmont Country Club’s Rocco Salvitti sits at the top of the leaderboard at a combined 15-under-par after 36 holes. He followed up Monday’s 63 with a six-under 66 on Tuesday. "I got off to a pretty good start, making some pars and getting settled in," said Salvitti. "I had a three-putt for par on nine but I was hitting really good shots. I just had to stay in it and keep doing what I was doing. I made a good birdie on 10, a nice putt on 11, a good up-and-down on 12, and from there on it was pretty smooth sailing. I had the bogey on 18 but playing the 35 holes before that bogey-free to start the event is really good golf. I think I'm playing very smart and I'm just excited to be out here." Salvitti, who just concluded his sophomore season on the University of Notre Dame men’s golf team, totaled five birdies for the round in addition to an eagle on 14. He's had a busy week -- competing in the Monroe Invitational in New York last weekend and driving down immediately to compete in this year's PAGA Amateur Championship. "I didn't have much time to prepare but throughout that tournament I found a couple things in my game that allowed me to be free this week," said Salvitti. "I came in with good swing feels and have just been playing good golf. This course has been great. The greens are in good shape and it's drying out nicely from the rain on Sunday so I'm really excited for the test tomorrow." Pittsburgh Field Club’s Matthew Mattioli, the leader after round one, fired a three-under 69 on Tuesday and trails Salvitti by just two strokes heading into the final round. He birdied six holes but got into some trouble late in the day, with a bogey on 6 and a double on 8. Others still within striking distance include third place Michael Lugiano (Huntsville Golf Club), who shot a four-under 68 this afternoon on his home course to sit at nine-under for the week. Nicholas Turowski (Hannastown Golf Club) shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday to remain at eight-under for the championship and is tied for fourth place with Chuck Tragesser (Willowbrook Country Club), who finished today's round with a five-under 67. Rounding out the top 11 competitors is a group of six tied for sixth place at six-under: Karl Frisk (Hanover CC), John Keba (Bethlehem GC), Timothy Peters (USGA/Western Pennsylvania GC), Scott Jordan (PAGA Individual Member), Hunter Stetson (Aronimink GC), and David Mecca (CC of Scranton.) The third and final round to determine the 2025 PAGA Amateur Champion begins on Wednesday morning, with the final group (Salvitti and Mattioli) scheduled to tee off at 9:09 a.m. The Pennsylvania Golf Association would like to thank the staff and membership of Huntsville Golf Club for the hospitality shown during today's rounds. Additional thanks go to DICK’S Sporting Goods for sponsorship of the event as the title sponsor of the PAGA.
