HAVERTOWN, Pa. – The first round is in the books at the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s (PAGA) 109th Open Championship from Llanerch Country Club, with three players tied at the top.
Threee professional lead the way. Defending champion Jake Sollon (Valley Brook Country Club, who also claimed the Open title in 2022) is knotted atop the leaderboard with Daniel Obremski and Anthony Sebastianelli (Rolling Green Golf Club), as the trio all shot a four-under-par 66.
Sollon, trying to become just the fourth player ever to win more than two PA Open titles, totaled five birdies on the day and recovered well after a bogey on hole No. 6.
“I kind of got off to a slow start and got frustrated after three-putting six,” said Sollon. “But then I made birdies on 7 and 8 and a good two-putt on 9 to finish the front. I’ve never played here before. So we came up on Saturday to play a practice round and I enjoyed the course. So I figured I would go out here, try to play well, and see what happens.”
Sebastianelli had a similar front nine, with a bogey (on No. 4) followed by a pair of birdies (on 5 and 7) and added four birdies (on 10, 11, 16, and 17) on the back nine.
“I told my caddy today we were just going to try to play some boring golf,” said Sabastianelli. “Trying to hit fairways and greens, and ended up doing that pretty well. I made a couple of putts early to help the confidence. I’ve been kind of up and down this year, some good, some bad, but I feel like over the last couple of weeks I’ve started to turn a corner. It was nice to kind of see the ball do what I wanted it to do today, so it was a step in the right direction. I’ll take tomorrow as it comes, the course is starting to firm up a little bit and the greens are quick, so I’ll attack the pins that are accessible and play smart to the pins that are tucked. Just play some boring golf again!”
Obremski’s day was up-and-down than his other two co-leaders, carding five birdies, three bogeys, and an eagle on the par-four 15th hole. There are five players tied for fourth place at two-under 68: Andrew Cornish (Green Valley CC), Mike Van Sickle (Sewickley Heights GC), Matthew Homer (Allentown Municipal), Cael Ropietski (Huntsville GC), and Anthony DeGol (Scotch Valley CC). Van Sickle was the last player to win consecutive PA Opens, doing so in 2007 and 2008. Homer had an interesting stretch on the back nine, with a birdie on 13, a bogey on 14, an eagle on 15, and another birdie on 16. Ropietski birdied the first hole, double-bogeyed No. 2, but locked in after that, adding birdies on 3, 10, 13, 14, and 16. DeGol had a rough front nine at three-over, but began the back nine with an eagle on hole No. 10 and birdies on 14, 15, and 16 to join the others at the top.
Play continues tomorrow with round two of three. Tee times begin at 7:30 a.m., with the last groups teeing off at 2:00 p.m.
