FLEETWOOD, Pa. – Spectacular play and some late-in-the-round clutch moments decided titles on the final day of the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s (PAGA) 36th Men’s and 6th Women’s Four-Ball Championship at Moselem Springs Golf Club. When all was said and done, the men’s team of R.J. Wren and Roberto Nieves of Lulu Country Club and the women’s duo of Emily Rensch and Kyla Quimby (Chambersburg CC/Moselem Springs GC) became champions on Tuesday afternoon.
Wren and Nieves led the field by a single stroke heading into today’s final round, and were paired up with another powerhouse duo in LedgeRock Golf Club’s Zach Dilcher and Brock Kovach. Low scores were harder to come by than they were on Monday, and the teams battled back-and-forth before a Kovach birdie on 16 tied the teams at -8 for the tournament. Wren responded right away with a birdie of his own on 17 to take the lead back, and pars from the entire foursome on 18 secured the championship for Wren and Nieves, finishing with a two-day total of -9 (131).
“We were really consistent today,” said Wren. “On the front nine we couldn’t get anything to fall but the good thing was that we had the looks for birdie. Roberto birdied nine with a great putt and then we both hit it to three feet on 10 which really helped us get some momentum going. I don’t think there was many holes where we didn’t have two good birdie looks. It was great playing with Brock and Zach, they were right there with us the entire time and it was good knowing where we had to be the entire round.”
It’s been an impressive couple of weeks for Nieves, who also took home the GAP Middle-Amateur title last week in his first individual appearance.
“RJ and I were college teammates for three years at the University of Delaware and I’m new to the area, so it’s my first go at all these events,” said Nieves. “Today was great and the golf course was awesome. We were steady and made a lot of pars, with just one counting bogey through all 36 holes. I was just trying to get out of RJ’s way, he was striping it and we just put together a great couple of rounds.”
Beyond Dilcher and Kovach in second place, Saucon Valley CC’s Thomas Young and Jake Haberstumpf finished third at -7 (133), Bent Creek CC’s Andrew Bilson and Logan Wagner placed fourth at -6 (134), and two teams tied for fifth at -5 (135): Joey Morganti and Andrew Curran (Overbrook GC/Philadelphia Cricket Club) along with Colin Smith and Sam Pancoast (Bidermann GC/Radley Run CC).
There were even more heroics on the women’s side, where first round leaders Barbora Millichip and Lisa Day (Honeybrook GC) forced a three-way playoff thanks to a 50-foot Millichip birdie on the 18th hole that knotted up three teams at +1 (147) – including Rensch/Quimby and Corinne McReynolds/Nicolette Bottos (Whitford CC/Rolling Green GC). Rensch and Quimby, who met each other playing in junior tournaments and will both be on the women’s golf team at Siena University this fall, came on late in the day – with par or better on the last five holes – including birdies from Quimby on holes No. 14 and 17 and an important par on 18 from Rensch, who had to get up-and-down from behind the green just to join the playoff.
“That’s a shot that I’ve always struggled with, hitting that high kind of flop shot,” said Rensch. “So I practiced it all last week just in case and wow, I needed it! So it was amazing to see all that work pay off. I think there were a lot of up and downs in our rounds. Sometimes we might have gotten a little down on ourselves but we really built each other back up and worked hard to get the win.”
After no winner was decided after one more go at hole 18, a second playoff hole was needed. With Rensch in trouble off the tee, it was up to Quimby – who had about 167 left to the hole.
“I hit a 5-hybrid and hit it really pure,” said Quimby. “I had struggled on the hole the past two before and ended up going in the water both times, but I learned from my mistakes and aimed a little more left to hit a pretty good shot.”
Quimby rolled the shot on the green for a 40-footer for birdie that she put within four feet for a pressure-packed par putt to win it all.
“I was just a little nervous and shaking a little bit,” recalled Quimby. “Emily and I looked it over a few times to make sure I had the right line and I felt pretty confident over it. I’ve been putting hours in with my putting because it’s something I normally struggle with and today I could see that I was putting a lot better than I normally do so it paid off. We both had some holes where we struggled but for the most part we just stayed positive and kept grinding.”
Runners-up McReynolds and Bottos, a pair of high school players from Conestoga, took their play to another level on the final nine holes, including birdies from Bottos on 11 and McReynolds on 12 and pars on the last six holes.
“We started today off a bit slow and were struggling to make par a bit,” said McReynolds. “But then we just got in a groove where we were hitting our spots and could strategize a bit more.”
“We definitely tried to be more confident and aggressive on the back nine,” said Bottos. “I think that worked in our favor a lot of the time. And that’s when we really started to push each other to do better.”
Millichip and Day finished tied for 2nd place after the playoff, with the top five finishers rounded out by fourth place Emilee Barkley/Brooke Graham (Moselem Springs GC/Manada GC) at +8 (154) and fifth place Adalena Robb/Ali Boyle (Greensburg CC/Westmoreland CC) at +10 (156).
Next up on the PAGA schedule is a pair of Amateur Championship Qualifiers next week: at Elmhurst Country Club for the Northeast Qualifier on Wednesday, June 10 and at Hannastown Golf Club for one of two West Qualifiers on Thursday, June 11.
The Pennsylvania Golf Association would like to thank the staff and membership of Moselem Springs Golf Club for the hospitality during this week’s Championship. Additional thanks go to DICK’S Sporting Goods for spomsorship of the event as the title sponsor of the PAGA. |
