SPRINGFIELD, Pa. – It was a great day to be a lower seed at the Pennsylvania Golf Association’s (PAGA) 22nd R. Jay Sigel Match Play Championship, with the underdogs winning seven of the eight first-round matchups on Tuesday morning at Rolling Green Golf Club. Most matches were closely contested, with the exception being the lone high seed to advance, as No. 4 Evan Barbin (Philadelphia Publinks Golf Association) bested John Sawin, 4 & 2, to book his spot in the quarterfinals.
Other players advancing to the quarterfinals included 2024 Sigel semifinalist Amani D’ambrosio (Longue Vue Club), who took down Patrick Isztwan (Huntingdon Valley CC), 3 & 1, in the 8/9 seed matchup. No. 16 seed Matthew Homer (Allentown Municipal) upended top seed and medalist from Monday, Hunter Swidzinski (Olde Stonewall Golf Club), 2 & 1, while No. 12 seed Thomas Young (Saucon Valley CC) advanced past Kevin Fajt (Hannastown GC), 3 & 2.
The upsets kept coming, with No. 15 seed Nick Werner (Huntsville GC), who survived a playoff on Monday to claim one of the last two spots in the bracket, defeating 2023 PAGA Player of the Year Calen Sanderson (Jericho National GC), 2 & 1.
Elsewhere, No. 10 Mark Miller (Philadelphia Cricket Club) got past No. 7 Colin Smith (PAGA Individual Member), 2 & 1, and No. 11 Samuel Feeney (Penn Oaks GC) defeated No. 6 Jake Haberstumpf (LedgeRock GC), 1 up.
Feeney’s opponent in the quarters would be another 2024 Sigel semifinalist, No. 14 seed Nicholas Turowski (Hannastown GC), who battled to the end with No. 3 seed Jeff Homer (Allentown Municipal) in the first round. Homer was 1-up after 12 holes but Turowski turned it around, winning three of the next five holes and holding on for the 1-up victory. Turowski was eliminated by eventual 2024 Sigel champion Patrick Sheehan in last year’s semifinals.
“Pat was really tough last year,” said Turowski. “I felt like I played my best golf against him and just got beat on 16. He had an amazing year last year but it made me have a little more confidence moving forward. My match this morning, in terms of a stress level, was 10 out of 10. I had to grind for every shot, I really didn’t feel like I was hitting it that good, but I kept with it. Then I cooled off, got some food, went back out this afternoon, and I just felt so relaxed and comfortable.”
That comfort led to results, with Turowski booking a spot in the semifinals for the second straight year with a 1 up win over Feeney. His next opponent will be Miller, who picked up a decisive victory, 5 & 4, over Werner in the quarters. Rounding out the final four in the top half of the bracket is D’ambrosio, who also earned semifinalist status two years running after a 4 & 3 win over Matthew Homer, and Barbin, who advanced 1-up over Young after winning the last two holes of the match.
The semifinals and final match are scheduled for Wednesday, July 9. |
