2025 Father Son and Parent Child Day 1 Recap

Scores

MALVERN, Pa. - Rainstorms late in the day complicated the first day of the Pennsylvania Golf Association's (PAGA) 7th Parent-Child and 16th Father-Son Championship at Chester Valley Golf Club, but the majority of the rounds were completed -- with Benjamin and Nicholas Saggers (USGA/GAP GC, Applecross CC) leading the Father-Son leaderboard and Makensy and Brandon Knaub (CC of York) on top in the Parent-Child.

Groups that were unable to finish on Monday will resume at 8:00 AM on Tuesday to complete the first round before beginning their second and final rounds.

Each Championship uses a Modified Chapman format, where both players in a pairing tee off then hit a second shot using their partner's ball. After both players' second shots, the team chooses one ball location to finish the hole using an alternate shot format.

The Saggers finished the day with a one-under 69 as the only pairing to shoot under-par. The duo tallied five birdies, inclding four on the back nine. John and Jim Curran (Chester Valley GC), playing on their home course, shot even par and are just one stroke back heading into the final round. Don and A.J. Donatoni (Hershey's Mill GC, Fox Hill CC), the 2018 champions of the event, are lurking in third place with a one-over 71. Rounding out the top five are 2019 champions Andrew and Thomas Porsch (CC of Harrisburg) and Brian Cooper Sr./Brian Cooper II (Chester Valley GC), as both teams are tied for fourth place with a score of three-over 73.

Makensy and Brandon Knaub were able to complete 15 holes and are the leaders at three-under-par. The Knaubs, who carded four birdies, also led the Parent-Child field after round one of last year's Championship -- but finished as runners-up to three-time champions champions Craig and Ella McRoberts (Valley Brook CC), who are currently tied for third place with Charley and Rick Kirby (Royal Manchester Golf Links and thru 16 holes) at four-over-par. Sitting in second place, also still within striking distance, is the team of McKylie and Daniel Boreman (Carlisle CC), the 2022 champions, who finished the day two-over-par thru 16. Chan Kwon and Lynda Kwon (Blue Bell CC, GAP) are in fifth place at five-over-par thru 15 holes.

Elsewhere, the Father-Son Forward (formerly Senior) Division is led by Chester Valley Golf Club's own Brian and Gary Grimes, who shot a two-over-par 72 and have a five-stroke lead over Jeff and Jason Miller (USGA/GAP GC, Colonial Golf & Tennis Club).

The Pennsylvania Golf Association would like to thank the staff and membership of Chester Valley Golf Club for the hospitality shown during today's rounds. Additional thanks go to DICK’S Sporting Goods for sponsorship of the event as the title sponsor of the PAGA.
