EXPORT, Pa. – Two teams picked up incredibly meaningful wins at this year’s Pennsylvania Golf Association’s (PAGA) 8th Parent-Child and 17th Father-Son Championship at Westmoreland Country Club. In the Father-Son bracket, Arnie Cutrell and Arnie Cutrell Jr. (Greensburg Country Club) picked up their second-ever PAGA Father-Son title and in 15 years – while the Parent-Child championship was claimed by Jason and Emilee Barkley (Moselem Springs Golf Club), their first win after competing in every single PAGA Parent-Child tournament to date. The Cutrells had a two-stroke lead over Grayson and James Wingerter (Llanerch Country Club) heading into the final round and the two teams battled all day long. Each team birdied three holes on the front nine in addition to holes No. 11 and 13. The results from hole 14 made things interesting, as the Cutrells three-putted while the Wingerters got up-and-down from the bunker to close to within a single stroke. A bogey from the Wingerters on 16 gave the Cutrells the two-stroke cushion back, which they would maintain with a birdie on 18 to clinch the win and finish -9 (133) for the week. “After 14 it felt like we lost our momentum and it was tough to keep it together,” said Arnie Cutrell. “But we played pretty solid. On the last hole, Arnie (Jr.) hit it to within a foot on the last hole and made it easy for us. I told him that it’s never easy to win, and we proved it today. It’s great. When we won before, Arnie was playing Junior Golf and then he went away to college and got a job in Virginia and we didn’t get to play much. But last summer we played a lot and we’re back into it now so we geared up for this one. It’s nice to win again after all these years. I may have won all those State events, but this is right up there with them.” “It feels awesome,” said Cutrell Jr. “Dad’s been winning big tournaments his whole life and, for me, I don’t have too much to hang my hat on except some Father-Sons. But having him as a partner makes the game a lot easier. He doesn’t put much pressure on me and I can feel relaxed. He doesn’t put blame on me even if I hit it by 6 feet on a 12-footer but we make a good team, especially in the Chapman format. It was fun out there.” Third place belonged to Douglas and Jordan Hallman (Manada GC), who completed the week with a -1 (141) and were the only other team under par. In the Parent-Child, the Barkleys trailed Steven Lucas and Jackie O’Hair (PAGA Individual Member/Whitford CC) by four strokes heading into the final 18 holes but fired the lowest round in the division all week, 71, that included birdies on holes No. 2, 11, and 16. The pair finished with a +7 (149), three strokes ahead of Lucas and O’Hair (+10, 152) and four strokes clear of third-place finishers Rick and Charley Kirby (Royal Manchester Golf Links) at +11 (153).
“Today went really well and I was hitting the ball a lot better,” said Emilee Barkley. “Specifically, off of the tee, I wasn’t hitting my driver very well yesterday. But today something just clicked and I was able to hit more fairways to put my dad in position to hit more greens and to make more putts. And that’s what happened, we made three birdies today after none yesterday so it felt a lot better. My dad and I are the only team that have played in every Parent-Child event and it means the world to me that we finally got the job done. I was putting some pressure on myself on the back nine because I’ve really wanted to win this tournament the last couple of years, especially as I’ve gotten better at the sport and we’ve become a really good team. Today we were able to get it done and it means a lot for me and my dad.” Elsewhere, first-place honors in the Father-Son Forward Division went to Jake and Joseph Templin (LedgeRock Golf Club), who shot a three-under 68 on the final day to leapfrog two other teams and win by four strokes. Mike Lintelman and Chelsea Dukovich (Pittsburgh Field Club, Sewickley Heights GC) topped the Parent-Child Forward leaderboard and completed the week at +22 (164).
