LIGONIER, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Golf Association’s (PAGA) 110th Open Championship is underway from Laurel Valley Golf Club, with plenty of impressive results from some of the state’s most competitive golfers. The final rounds of the day were suspended due to darkness but will be completed on Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m., to be immediately followed by the second round of the three-day event.
Talon Kriebel (Glengarry Golf Links) leads the overall and Professional Division leaderboards with his -6 (66). He started on the back nine and birdied holes No. 11, 15, and 16 to make the turn at -3 (33). He added four more birdies on the front nine (2, 3, 4, and 6) with a bogey on 5 sandwiched in between.
Jake Haberstumpf (Saucon Valley Country Club) is one of five players on the day at -5 (67) and is tied for the lead in the Amateur Division as well as tied for second overall. He also started on the back nine and carded six birdies (on 11, 14, 17, 1, 4, and 6) with a bogey on 8 the only truly negative result of the day.
“Today was good and I definitely hit it well,” said Haberstumpf, who finished tied for eighth overall and runner-up in the Amateur Division at last year’s PAGA Open Championship at -2 for the week. “I just didn’t get all the putts to fall but I’m in a solid spot for tomorrow. This course fits my game. I hit it pretty straight and pretty long and with the fairway bunkers and the length of the course, it just fits well. It’s a hard golf course. You just have to play well and see where it falls. But my driving and iron play were definitely strengths out there today.” Tied for third in the Amateur Division at -4 (68) are Scott Jordan (PAGA Individual Member) and Logan McGinn (Williamsport Country Club) while a trio are at -3 tied for fifth place: Amani D’ambrosio (Longue Vue Club), David Kim (LuLu Country Club) and Dane Mohap (FSGA Sun Coast.)
Back in the overall standings, other players to keep an eye on include Zac Oakley (Bidermann G.C.), Braden Shattuck (Rolling Green Golf Club), and Matt Holuta, who all are also sitting at five-under after shooting a 67. Of note, Shattuck finished fifth at last year’s PAGA Open. Connor Schmidt (Laurel Oak Country Club) is tied for seventh place overall with his -4 (68).
Defending Open champion Patrick Sheehan (Talamore Country Club) sits tied for 28th place at even par.
